Exercise & Movement at midlife

Use it, move it, or lose it!

The Importance of Exercise and Movement

“If you want to reverse aging, exercise is the answer.”  Watch this short video as Dr. Mark Hyman explains are the great benefits of exercise and why it is so important as we get older.

Whether you love to exercise or hate it, the fact remains it is a necessary part of a healthy lifestyle.  Experts agree, the best exercise, no matter your stage in life, is the one that you will do.  However, that doesn’t mean the way you worked out in your 20’s will still be the best activity for you in your 50’s and beyond.

Here are a few of my favorite online sources about exercise, movement,

and ideas about how to stay active at midlife and beyond.

Flipping Fifty

YES:  Debra Atkinson knows how a woman at midlife needs to workout in order to gain muscle and lose body fat.  As an exercise physiologist and tri-athelete, she had to re-learn how to workout differently at midlife taking into consideration our changing hormones and the impact of stress.  So far I like everything that she advises for women at midlife!

Get Healthy U

I follow Chris on Instgram as a midlife exercise person.  While I haven’t personally done her workouts, they appear to be strength-based and are ones you can do at home.  She is also a lifelong exercise person who is now in her 50’s.

Susan Niebergall

If you are looking for weight training ideas, proper form, and technique,  Susan appears to know what she’s doing in the gym.  At 59, her midlife results are impressive.

I do not endorse her emphasis on ‘calorie deficit’ to lose weight.  So many other things go into losing weight at midlife, and I think she misses the mark by stressing so heavily the ‘calories in/calories out’ concept.

Yoga with Adriene

I have been trying for the last several years to make yoga a more reguIar practice.  I know need to balance my strength training with flexibility….not to mention the other health benefits of yoga.  I found Adriene on YouTube and really like her.  Although I can’t say my practice is very regular yet, her down-to-earth routines are easy to follow and she doesn’t make things too complicated or overly “woo woo”.  It’s a real bonus when her dog, Bengi, is laying around.  🐶
